Gideon

"Gideon" is a short documentary I made on my Dad and where he grew up. Starring Eric Dell and his mom, Carolyn Dell, Gideon explores what it was like growing up in a small town and looks back on fond memories of growing up there. I dedicate this film to my Dad and our shared love of film. I will always be thankful for you introducing me to the beautiful art of filmmaking. Shot on 250D and 500T 16MM film, processed at Kodak Film Lab Atlanta. Edited and color graded on Final Cut Pro X. Music by Elizabeth Cotten and Johnny Cash.

CATHARSIS

When one closes themselves off, deep feelings often become buried. This is the explosion of those feelings.

Using a variety of found footage along with footage I filmmed myself, I was able to create this experimental short film. The audio is a combination of music, sound effects, and spoken word. Ideally viewed in a dark room on two CRTs playing a few seconds apart on a loop.

TIME

My goal for this project was to show the idea of time and sonder, and the relationship between those two concepts. I took yearbook photos of GSU students, along with personal home videos and photos to show how much things change over time. I wanted to portray how time is linear and always moving. The audio is of Alan Watts, a popular philosopher, speaking about time and our relationship with it. The theme is from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I chose this because it has a melancholy and nostalgic sound. After layering and altering the audio, I was able to get the exact sound looking for.

This animation was directly applied on clear 16mm celluloid film. The animation was created with various pens, markers, and paint.

This short video shows various test footage I shot on the Arriflex 16SR. All footage was shot on 250D Color Negative 7207 Film, and then color graded and edited on Final Cut Pro.

Sweet Melancholy

My goal for this film was to juxtapose feelings of melancholy and joy to show how it has felt to grieve a loved one. I wanted to portray how grieving is not always crying, but it can also be reminiscing on memories you had with that person. Now those memories, even though sweet, are tinged with a bit of sadness.

Bat Country

To create this short, I filmed my Panasonic VCR-TV while it played a VHS of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I then imported that footage to Final Cut and edited it. I used various masks and layers to get the desired effect while also cutting out and repeating specific shots from the scene.

The Laughing Heart

Using footage I've captured over the years and pairing it with a poem by Charles Bukowski, I was able to create The Laughing Heart

Copy Cat

Copy Cat is a short horror film about a group of film students who have an unfortunate run-in with a serial killer. This short film was a collaboritive project made with the Film Club at GSU. Co-directed by myself and Myles Wishart.

The Housewife

The Housewife is a drama with a sci-fi twist. It follows the story of a housewife, Susan, and her abusive husband, Harold. This is the first film I wrote and directed, and it was made my first year of film school. The film stars Maggie McCosh and Isaac K. Miller.
